Our School Events

Here at Corrandrum NS our pupils participate in a wide range of activities, both curricular and extra curricular.

SEPTEMBER

A new school year

A new school year means fresh new books, new teachers, new learning goals, and most importantly new friends. We are so excited to welcome all of our children back to school after the summer holidays, and a really big céad míle fáilte to all of our new Junior Infants.

OCTOBER

Maths Week Ireland

The children engage in lots of Maths activities to encourage learning of Maths and to develop problem solving strategies.  These skills provide our pupils to build strong foundations for Maths learning.  First to Sixth class pupils also engage with Mangahigh – a website game based learning platform with an in-school and national competition.

OCTOBER

Halloween

On the last day before the Midterm Break in October, we have a Dress-Up Day.  Scholastics Book Fair, which all of the children enjoy, also occurs during the month of October

NOVEMBER

Science Week Ireland

A week-long event in Ireland, celebrating science in our everyday lives. The children enjoy hands-on science activities, including WEDO Lego building projects, designed to enhance pupil curiosity and skills in computing and science.  On occasion, we invite traveling workshops to visit our school which the children thoroughly enjoy.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER

Food Dudes

This is an award winning curriculum-linked evidence-based healthy eating programme, developed to encourage children to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. It is based on repeated tastings of fresh fruit and vegetables, rewards and positive role models. 

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER

Swimming

The children from Second to Sixth Classes have the opportunity of a 6 weekly Friday swim in Tuam Swimming Pool.

DECEMBER

Christmas Dress Up

On the day of the Christmas holidays, each class gets to watch a Christmas movie, followed by treats and a possible arrival of…..Santa Claus. Children in the lead up to Christmas design a Christmas jumper. There could also be other surprises in store!  The children have all participated in concert/class performances which have been eagerly anticipated over the years. The children also support the wonderful Team Hope Christmas Shoe Appeal.

JANUARY

Teddy Bear Hospital

This event is organised by the Sláinte Society, the NUIG Galway branch of the International Federation of Medical Students Associations every year. This is a lottery event so no guarantee our school will be selected… but if we are…Junior Classes will go to the Teddy Bear’s Hospital at NUIG with their teddy bears where teddies are checked out by the doctors.  In the process, they hope to help children feel more comfortable around doctors and hospitals.

Catholic Schools Week

Every January we participate in the week long Catholic Schools Week. The highlight of this week is undoubtedly Grandparents Day, a day we all love.

FEBRUARY

Pancake Tuesday

On this day, the children bring in pancakes for their lunches which are reheated by the staff to be enjoyed with toppings of the children’s choices.

World Book Day & Character Dress Up

During this week we promote the enjoyment of books and reading. We aim to encourage our pupils to explore the pleasure of books and reading. The children all receive a book token. We also have a competition in each class where we write our own books, we have prizes for best author, illustrator and best book title. We also dress up as characters from our favourite books.

St. Patrick’s Day

We celebrate our national saint with a special mass in St. Brendan’s Church, Corrandulla. The children and staff provide the music by playing various musical instruments including tin whistles, guitar, piano and percussion.

Seachtain na Gaeilge

There are lots of activities going on throughout this week such as Irish dancing and a whole school Tráth na gCeist as Gaeilge. The children dress in green, white and gold. Le linn na seachtaine beimid ag eagrú neart gníomhaíochtaí trí ghaeilge. Chomh maith le sin beimid ag déanamh iarracht faoi leith Gaeilge a labhairt i rith an lae.

Various classes engage in egg hunts and lots of art takes place.

MAY

First Holy Communion and Sacrament of Confirmation

First Holy Communion is celebrated for Second Class children during the month of May. The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated on alternate years by Fifth and Sixth Classes during February.

MAY/JUNE

Sports Day and School Tours

These days are organised around the weather and calendar. Sports Day takes place on our school grounds where the children engage in lots of activities such as sprints, egg and spoon races, sack races and so on. School Tours take place each year which are eagerly looked forward to by everyone.

JUNE

Graduation

We honour our sixth class pupils before they leave Corrandrum with a special ceremony. We show our appreciation for them with various memorabilia built up during their years with us.

Incidentals throughout the year

As part of Green Schools, we hold WOW days – Walk on Wednesday, where the children all meet, and staff/parents walk the children in their high-vis jackets to school.

Cake Sales organised by the senior classes take place and funds raised are given to a chosen charity/fundraiser.

Sport and GAA Training

Is facilitated both internally and by external coaches, this activity is all year round. The senior end of our school takes part in Cumann na mBunscol and FAI soccer as well as the county athletics competition. The O’ Riordan Cup has been eagerly contested by all teams with each team consisting of children from First to Sixth classes.
